Really? DC? Do either of you read comics or just watch the movies? Yeah Batman is a decent comic but this question was about the Universe. That means outside of Batman you have some real crap comics, villains, and sub teams.
And can anyone really know where the hell Metropolis is? Is it in Kansas? New York? LA? Hell you can not even pin down which coast Metropolis is on.
The DC universe has been rebooted so many times with the Infinity Crisis storylines it is not even funny. Do you realize that Clark's dad has died about 16 times because they keep rebooting the continuity and bring him back only to have him have another heart attack and dieing within the year?
As a universe whole DC is the worst.
And yes I am a huge and current comic book collector with about 30 monthly titles I get. My DC titles are both Batman and Detective Comics, Superman and Action Comics, and Wonder Woman. Any other DC title I have not been able to get into.
For Marvel I run the majority of the main titles. Spider-man, X-men, 3 Avenger titles, Captain America, Black Panther, Wolverine, Fantastic Four and others. I also do some independents.
Angel and Spike from IDW. Buffy and Serenity from Dark Horse. Bomb Queen and Savage Dragon from Image.

Marvel for me too. To me, Stan Lee is to comics what Gary Gygax is to RPGs. Yes, I said it.
Shadow is right, the plethora of characters and the unique ways they got their abilities is pretty cool.
I bought a video game, Marvel Ultimate Alliance. It is wicked awesome. I can't get my old man to stop playing it, even though we've beaten it several times.
I always wanted to be an X-man, or at least a mutant.

Aesthetically speaking I think its a wash with either Image or Dark Horse. I voted Image because back when I collected religiously they had many really good team oriented books out. I would say Dark Horse follows a close second with Marvel a distant third. Marvel does have the most characters and I had a good time reading the Marvel vs DC books. Those were cool.

I'm a Marvel boy through and through, but I do love other characters and teams (Green Lantern, Gen13, Wetworks, JLA), but my comic collection is 90% Marvel.

I recently canceled the majority of my DC title comic books. Action Comics and Superman (the two Superman titles) don't have Superman in them. And Detective Comics and Batman (the two Batman titles) don't have Batman in them.
Not only that but even without the two DC stars, they are lame.
As for where are Superman and Batman, Batman is dead and Nightwing, aka Robin, aka Dick Grayson is the current Batman. And Superman is on another planet called New Krypton helping the new planet of Kryptonians get started.
Oh and the Wonder Woman series? Yeah I dropped that because it turned into a soap opera. She is hanging with Black Canary working through issues of trying to marry a human co-worker of hers, losing her mother and then getting her back, one of her sisters attacking the president, her losing control over her lasso, and most recently she rebelled against Zeus and has lost the favor of the whole Greek pantheon because the Greek gods are dicks and she finally realized it.
Yeah the DC universe sucks ass in the cannon of comic books.
