Sometimes I find it a challenge to live up to an 18 intelligence, because I tend to make some rash decisions as a player. Then again, it can be hard to play a dumb witted character because as a player I would come up with things that my character wouldn't. Intelligence check!

I find it way harder to play a dumb character, because as a seasoned player, you personally know things that you should and should not be doing or saying... but your character might not - It is hard to RP that effectively sometimes.

Sadly, an experienced player is not always a responsible one.

I found dumbing down to role play my fighter, "Frankie" to be very challenging. As an electrical engineer in real life, I tend to research things, be logical and think stuff through before acting. So role playing a meatshield that was dumber than a box of rocks was a challenge. Once I figured out a focus for him, it became easier. And what was his focus you ask? Dem der drow chicks, ale, and brawlin wit mees goods pal, Rot Gut.
One of his "classic" moves, during a tavern brawl with his friend Rotgut, was to grab a loaf of bread from a nearby table, and proceed to smack Rotgut over the head with it.

I really don't feel that they are that difficult.
Take a ride on the NYC transit system, and just mimic what you see fellow passengers doing and use it during play.
i.e. Some are intellegent enough to step around that strange substance on the platform - while others wade right through it.
Others ask how to get to where they already are, while some ignore those same individuals because they're where they should be.

It takes talent to do either. The best was Football the fighter. His talking sword was smarter. Used three wishes for ice cream. One to wish for the ice cream. One to change vanila to tuti-fruity, and one for more ice cream. Almost died watching the DMs face.

About the same for me. Either type of character is a challenge.

When it gets to really stupid characters, it gets hard for me. I had a character at one point, CN with an 11 int... our DM at the time (thankfully he was a temp) turned us all into mixed undead, and I rolled up the correct kinds to reduce my int by 8. So, here I am with a CN character with 3 int; best I could come up with was playing him similar to Ed from Ed, Edd, and Eddy. Sadly, there were times where I figured out a puzzle, and of the rest of the party only 1 other guy was trying and he just couldn't get it. Frustrated the HELL out of me. And then there was another moment where I said to some monster we just met "we're here for your treasure" because, well, we were. He died there thankfully.
Smart characters are easier, but sometimes I miss obvious things or just can't quite figure out a puzzle, or just plain do something stupid, and at times like those I go, "why am I playing a smart character?" I think it boils down to either end of the spetrum being a bad idea for me. Which is silly, since part of me wants to min/max any time I play a Psionicist and I do so frequently.

Dumb characters are hammers. Not that hard to play. You just bash everything. Door with a puzzle lock on it? You bash it down.
"If it moves, kill it. If it doesn't move, kill it. If it's a tree, kill it." - Adam Sessler
Smart on the other hand may be tougher. You can meta game a bit as your character is just that more insightful that he would "figure it out". But when it comes to riddles and in game puzzles that you can't figure out will your DM allow your smarter character roll a check to find the answer?
I have heard it said that your INT times 10 equals your IQ. So your average person is an IQ of 100 or a 10 INT. Retardation starts at 80 IQ with a 60 IQ consider to be full on handicapped. A 3 INT according to the rules is an extremely intelligent animal. (Talking parrots, dogs that can fetch and tell apart colors and shapes, sign language speaking apes.) And 1 INT is your standard lizard. See food, eat it.
That makes play any INT of 12 (Genius begins at 120 IQ) more difficult for us. I personally have never taken an IQ test but consider myself above average. (I was in college starting in 10th Grade and went full time to college instead of high school my senior year. I have always been in AP classes since 3rd grade.)
I would place myself at about a 110-120 IQ. But to get above that you get into exponential increases. If we don't think on the level of a 15 INT or 150 IQ how do you make-up the insight that someone like that would have? I liken it to watching a few of those cop shows like Numb3rs or the Mentalist. They meta-game in real life just seeing and knowing things that others would never see or know.

I tend to put a fairly high stat into intelligence, I just can't manage a stupid character. I guess it's a weakness of mine.
