Just to put a million XP in perspective...

Here are the classes, the level you'd be at, the amount of XP you'd have beyond that level's minimum and the amount of XP required to get to the following level.

I still go with the gold over the experience. Like I said, I like playing the low levels.

1 million gp will be more trouble than blessing for a level 1 PC. How can a level one PC keep 1 million gp safe? And there aren't any magick-shops in my campaigns to buy +5 vorpal swords and all...so that much wealth would only attract brigands and thieves and would cause the death of an inexperienced PC.

XP. I enjoy high-level characters, and high-level characters can usually find ways to get enough gold to meet their needs. 1.9.2.3

But you could buy a ton of security with 1 million gold. Remember, your aristocrats and kings are typically very low level since they are not out killing monsters, they are the ones hiring adventurers to protect them.

That said, playing a boring King on a throne is not so much fun.

Personally my decision on what I would pick depends on the edition we are playing and is the book of magic items available for me to spend my million gold in.

1st and 2nd Edition were very gear oriented. This is a little less so in 3rd edition and taken even further in 4th edition. 4th edition is all about the levels with powers abilities only gained when you high enough level.

1st and 2nd edition are more "real world" where you just buy a much larger gun. The whole "equalizer" theory of gunpowder comes into play.

Personally I like 4th edition better. Less realistic, more fun to play. Levels mean something in 4th edition. 2 edition was fun but I had a King's Knight in Niemz Realm that for about a period of 6 months real time was losing money every mission just keeping enough healing potions on hand to prevent himself from dieing. It got to the point where I had to decide to NOT play a mission because he knew the reward would not cover his costs and he could not afford to assist the people with their problem.

Realistic but not fun. I didn't get to play.

You know, I used to love playing low level characters as well,Taican. That was until my lvl 2 bard got dropped in Ravenloft...... nuff said LOL.
