As the Dm you dont even have to try and kill them off, a lot of players just do it to themselves...lol.

One of the times I ran Forgotten "straight" we neve got out of waterdeep. The city, the under mountain. 2 years of play, and 10 levels gained, and never got out of town.

Man, they've really done a number on the Realms lately, haven't they? (for 4th edition)

Yeah, my campaign setting of choice (Eberron) is mostly untouched but the FR went through the wringer for 4th Edition. I don't have my book with me but here is some of what I remember. I believe they advanced the story like 10 years and magic exploded again. - Eliminster is some crazy old man wandering the countryside
- The Simbul exploded
- Mystra is dead (Killed by a stick to the head.)
- the tinker gnome island was washed away (lusken or luthen or something like that)
- The Red Wizards of Thay have all been chased out by the school of necromancy and their leader (Mazorian the lich I believe)
- the underdark had a huge portion of it collapse
- the world of Abeir joined with a parallel world in some locations giving rise to at least two new countries. (Ankul and another I believe.)
- Warforged now exist in FR
- A few other gods were killed off
The one thing I will say I liked is the fall of Eliminster. It is about time that Mary Sue was taken out of the story. I don't mind powerful characters but that guy was like your DM saying, sure you can have all 18 stats, the love of a Goddess who will rescue you out of hell, immortality so you can never die, and we will just make up some powers that will allow you to instantly kill anything. That is just bad writing there. Other than that, they got rid of all the Mary Sue powers and spells. There is no spellfire, uber-cleric spells, and crazy super drow. With the re-imaging of balancing 4th Edition they got rid of the power creep that has plagued Forgotten Realms since late 2nd Edition. P.S. The 4th Edition game I am currently playing is set in the Forgotten Realms so I am actually playing there now.

Yeah, I miss the Realms of around '88-mid 90's...

I like villains as well as good characters, but the dark one's are my favourites. My favourite character is Aballister Bonaduce, the father of Cadderly Bonaduce. Then there is Dendybar the Mottled as well with his flesh golem named Bok.
There is also one character who is in the top 5 of my hit list, it's Finder Wyvernspur, a chaotic bard and maybe demigod.

Don't forget about good ol' Artemis Entreri. He's always been my favorite character to read about. Salvatore brought him back in his latest book, "Neverwinter."

I read the Drizzt novels back in the day, but I never really got much else into the novels and shit.
I always played in the Forgotten Realms, and I had access too (and now Internets) a fairly large amount of the modules etc... My group back in the day was focused around Selune, my character at high level became her chosen (with virtually no benefits because you know, DMs) not that she appeared often but typically we were working to some goal for her, or defending Toril in the context of it being Selune's creation.
We never incorporated anything past 2nd ed into our lore and took an alternate path. I've been working forward with that as a dm, and I like it being a separate different realms, especially with all the weird changes that got made starting with 3rd.

We are always interested in new players! The game has been running in some form or fashion since about 1984. This party has been playing for over 13 years, with a few new players filling in as some older ones literally died or left the game due to real life issues. We have moved from tabletop to an online game that that is similar to a pbem (play by email) but we use a forum to post, interact and this allows us more of a "tabletop" feel. The players have changed over the years and we play in the world created back in the 80's. There are actually multiple campaigns running in the world at once (different parties, couple different DM's) so think of it like playing in more of a forgotten realms style setting. The campaign is so old, that there are actually a couple of 1st edition characters that have been integrated in from other campaigns... Here is the forum site which we use to keep more of a tabletop feel and allow for moves, discussions, party planning etc. sacredscrollsdnd.proboards.com/create an account and go the general section. The Claiming Greenland posts are the most current (there is a full archive section to REALLY delve into the history of the party. Just looked at the myriad of posts and notes, and quickly came to the realization that you will spend an eternity trying to find a lot of history. So I am going to give you some detail to keep you from feeling completely lost. So here is a super abbreviated history of the world and the party. The party is currently 8-9th level. For new PC's, we use the old 4d6 for each stat, dropping the lowest die, mages/casters will have a small initial spell list (you will add more spells as you begin), and we will start with a couple of basic magic items (again, build it up as you go). The party has recently completed building a small castle, and is clearing out an orc fortress (they should be done in very short order). Typically, for dice rolls we use online rollers like www.pbegames.com/roller/ that allow you send a copy to the DM (me, and my email address is archmagev@yahoo.com). Currently, the party is fighter heavy but has a couple of multiclassed elf mages, and a skilled cleric. Stealth has never been their forte, though they do have a pair that do a suitable job of it. There is one NPC (a halfling fighter/rogue named Shorn) if you wanted to skip the character creation, but a new character would be welcome as well and we are at a great place to work them into the group. If you join up, because there is so much history, you will have tons of questions as you play, do not be afraid to ask "stupid" questions (no question is really dumb, so never fear) to others or message me in the forum or via email (forum messages probably get a faster response nowadays, lol).
