Hmm, would really have to think about that one, it's been a long time since I played in Greyhawk.

All the origanal spell names came from Greyhawk. IE Bigby,Mordenkainen,Otiluke ect... I dont think I have read anything about any of them but they could be intersting reads.

My understanding is that the reason for that fact is that Gary Gygaxx's original role playing group included such personae and these were spells that those respective players had come up with.

Looks to me that Gygax had very caster heavy groups then.

You also have to consider how many items they also created.

I'm not so sure that he had as heavy caster groups as it might appear, my understanding, which may be way off here, was that he had several main groups of test players and such and they went through several characters each in the process, not to mention that it wasn't all developed from just one campaign. In fact, my understand was that even after Dungeons & Dragons was released, he continued gaming with these same groups (more than one) and developed Greyhawk along with the items, spells, etc for release as Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and then played with them even more before 2nd Edition was released... though from what I always understood to be true, he played in Greyhawk exclusively and the other campaign settings came from other developers/gamers within his company, TSR. Of course, all of this was before everything left his control...

But back to the topic at hand, my favorite of all time. Is definitely my first, The Temple of Elemental Evil.

Very valid point, in 3rd edition they made everything operate on the assumption of a 4-5 member party because their research showed that most people played in groups of 4-5 characters on average, but I've done every number from solos to groups of 25+ players in the past and 1st & 2nd edition both considered all of those parties 'normal' and acceptable.

I can reach with out stretching and touch my 1e stuff. ;D Side by side are the T1-4, S1-4, and the A1-4, as well as the GDQ series. Have several other modules if I turn around from my lounging desk chair. If they could put a human brain to the computer game, it would have great potential. But their push to meet a deadline vice listening to their Quality Control led to an inferior product to many disappointed fans. Though with all the offical patches and those by Circle of Eight, it's play is much better. But the computer doesnt react in different areas if you destroy a section and come back the next day like a real DM would. Yeti

Mine aren't at my computer desk.. well, ok, my 1st edition Deities and Demigods is, but that's mud related.. I have a bookshelf that contains all my gaming stuff when it's not in use, the basic boxed sets, the 1st & 2nd edition, & 3rd edition, plus a few other gaming systems materials too. I can't argue with that assessment, I didn't like the computer versions very much beyond the fact that they were actually D&D rather than The Bard's Tale, but when they first came out, The Bard's Tale was a much better game overall. *shrug*

Think if it had incorporated the Baldur's Gate multiplayer as well it could have really hit for the fences. Maybe with some more setting on difficulty. Harder settings adding templates to the monsters. That and screw the level limit.
