I had a friend once who did nothing all day but play EVERCRACK! This guy was obsessed! I think by the time we finally pried him away from his computer, he had aged a couple of years, grown a beard, and his eyes looked like huge, unblinking red saucers surrounded by dark, wrinkly, silly putty! The game is EEEEEEVILLLLLLL I tell you! ;D

any online game that I don't have to pay to play. Why should I have to pay 50 bucks for a game then shell out 15.95 a month to play and have some A**hole wack me just when I start out?

That's one of the best things about muds, most are entirely free.

I've been playing guild wars but it's tough to play when you don't know anyone else who is playing and no one ever wants to form a group to go C/W missions ,and my personal favorite, abandon the group when the going gets tough.

Very understandable, I've seen that happen myself, though not usually on my own mud, but part of that is that our crowd is pretty small most of the time, when we have a crowd, so when folks do group up, they generally have already confirmed that everyone's got time for the 'run' and all actually want to do it. And of course very few on our mud are really afraid of death since they can always just go to the undertaker to get their corpse back.

I played EverCrack for 6 years. Haven't played in a long time tho. I got bored of it. Now I play Neverwinter Nights online. It's free to play and there are a ton of player-made persistent worlds. I play on one of a large group of linked worlds. The group is called CoPaP (Confederation of Planes and Planets). Their goal is to create the entire D&D known universe...and more. I'm actually in the middle of creating Sigil. Never been happier playing here. And it's mandatory roleplay. Although they say things ooc once in a while. Or just send tells. But regular talking is mandatory RP.
I've tried many a MUD and just can't get into all the text. My brain just grew up in the graphical world.

But regular talking is mandatory RP. Most of that sounds pretty cool. I strongly encourage RP in my mud, but I really dislike the notion of making it mandatory, I'd rather have folks exclusively using the OOC channel than not willing to talk or interact in case they're not in-character enough for the staff. I've tried many a MUD and just can't get into all the text. My brain just grew up in the graphical world. I'm sorry, that's a real shame, though you're far from the first person I've talked to who felt that way. Whatever happened to using your imagination to create the "graphics"?

I'm going on 7 years of playing Everquest. I've played WoW, Neverwinter Nights, Mudded and none have compared to the epic size of EQ. I play on the Bristlebane server in a guild called Club Fu. It is one of the top guilds on any server and is alot of fun beating content that other people may never even see even in other large raiding guilds.

and nothing beats paying a monthly fee on top of the price of the software itself to be able to get pretty pictures instead of doing a little reading and letting your imagination paint the pictures instead.

I'll play along.. I don't look down my nose at you for it, I just have to wonder what a gamer is doing wasting money to see pretty pictures when he could create better ones instead.

I find on line gaming to be like religion, everyone has different views and different tastes. Preaching to someone why they shouldn't like what they like is pointless and gets no one anywhere. I played text based MUDS and even did area design for them for years. They evolved to visual I moved on and enjoy them more now. Being creative and having an open imagination is not a monopoly that is held in text and books contrary to what people might have me think. A well thought out plot be it in a book, MUD, MMORPG, or movie will inspire my imagination to fill in the blanks no matter how much I am shown visually.

Still got those areas? What codebase were they for? What theme? We do accept donations in the form of prebuilt areas.
