^How many years do you think we will have to wait? A good 5-10 years? Or is it even closer? PS:Am I annoying you with my never-ending questions? Nah, honestly I think it's only about 3-4 years away still, but only the folks at WotC really know. PS: Nah, not in the least, if I can help someone, I'm happy to do so, and if you've got questions, others might too. -The Mystic Heirophant

I have to agree, we use a blend of 1st and 2nd Ed. rules. Most of our players have played for years...Third Ed. means buying new books.

Well, I've seen every Edition in action, and it's just my opinion, but 2nd Edition seems to be the most 'realistic' version in terms of what a PC can and cannot do... Of course, we only have humans to test out these theories on, but humans are by far the most prevalent race in the game, anyway.

Any true long time player would vote for 2nd Ed.

If so, we need more 'special cases' like you, buddy!

here goes nothing. 2nd edition. I didn't play D&D long and moved to AD&D quick. I don't have anything against 1st-ed, and use allot of 1st-ed books but I like the options in 2nd-ed (not "players options" books) for character development. Most of the complete handbook series is good, non-weapon proficiencies is a good system. lots of role playing potential. As published 2nd ED was a dark time for demons and devils in games but the old books had them and they were COMPATIBLE. 3RD-ED was broke from the beginning. 3.5 tried to fix it and was broke in other ways. Character creation is long and involved (somehow it reminds me of chartmaster). EVERYTHING in the game ties you to a 1"x1" gaming grid. There is no way to really just "wing it" without miniatures. don't get me wrong, I like miniatures and use them when its complicated or just when it looks cool , but I absolutely HATE a system that requires them to use most, if not all the system and character abilities. A night of 3rd-ed/3.5 might as well be a night of Battletech or Micro Armor. I also think the system breaks down at about 15th lvl to being nothing but opposed skill roll after opposed skill roll with all the modifiers being larger than the actual die roll. what fun is that? It also seems that 3rd/3.5 was written to make conversions of old material purposely difficult. I can take material from other game systems and with a little work, drop them into a 2nd Ed game, but converting anything to 3rd/3.5 makes my head explode. I'll stop Ranting now. ;D

Good rant, my friend! Good rant! But you know, what's more, we even have a special thread reserved for 'Rants,' so you might find a little extra space in there for your (much welcomed) opinions! And as far as 3rd Edition and 3.5, you hit the proverbial nail right on the head...especially about the character creation process... I would never put my players through such nonsense!

My favorite version is 1st Ed AD&D, it's what I learned on and played in the most.
The last upgrade I made was early 2nd Ed. I never played with the options or skills and powers stuff.
Then, many years later I tried out 3 Ed. I didn't like it because it turned everything I knew backward and didn't translate well. Sadly, it was like a whole new game.

Yeah, they've changed the targeted age range from college age, to 10 year olds and teenyboppers. It's a munchkin's dream come true!

You just watch... Someone who really cares about the game is gonna buy out Hasbro's shares and put out a 4th addition...(which mysteriously happens to function in all respects just like 2nd addition). ;D
