No if it had the 3.+ skills and feats, it had the better material written for it.

So you're saying that you'd cast your vote for option 2 because you didn't vote for 2nd edition but if it had 3rd editions skills/feats system you would've voted for for 2nd instead?

Err, please do not bash me too hard, but I thought AD&D and 2E were the very same things...So I voted for 2nd edition. But what is AD&D and why it is different than 2nd edition? (2E) Or am I confusing the facts?

Ooo, I get to give a little history lesson..

The game started out (once it became Dungeons and Dragons) as the basic boxed sets. After awhile TSR came out with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons which is commonly called 1st edition these days. After some years, Gary Gygaxx lost control of the company and they released 2nd edition. Eventually they released the 'Player's Options' books which were often referred to (at least in my circles) as 2.5 edition. Back in 2000, shortly after Hasbro bought what was left of TSR under the auspices of Wizards of the Coast, they released 3rd edition and dropped the word Advanced from the game's name. Rather recently (around the beginning of 2004 if memory serves), they released 3.5 edition which remains the 'current' edition and only edition still "in print" these days. We all know that eventually there will be a 4th edition, but it doesn't exist yet (at least not officially, there have been rumors that the game developers at WotC have already been working on it since shortly before the release of 3.5 edition, in fact, according to Monte Cooke, what was finally released as 3.5 edition was planned to be released as 4th edition but they decided that it wasn't really enough to justify a whole new edition so they stripped out a few things that they wanted to not release without a full new version and released it as 3.5 edition.)

So you think there will be a 4th edition as well? Oh my, WHAT they can change and improve? Even 3,5 is so ridiculously different than good old 2E!

While I'm flattered at your references to my wisdom, it's really just long memory and old age.

Don't feel badly, you're not that old and haven't got that much experience, no one should be faulting you at all. At least you had the courage & wisdom to ask the question so that someone could provide the answer.

Oh, I'm sure that WotC wants the money enough that there will indeed be a 4th edition, and eventually a 5th and maybe even 6th edition. As for what else they can improve.. well, that's a whole separate issue. Ideally they could bring some of the 2nd edition and 1st edition ideas back to the game with better clarification and they could revamp some of the math involvement so that instead of just easier math, we also have less math.. beyond that, who knows, there's certainly plenty of room for real improvement in every edition of the game to date.

You're absolutely right, though, 3rd edition was such a leap from 2nd edition that it's almost a different game altogether, but there are significant similarities too.. what will 4th edition look like? I can't wait to find out out, but I can't begin to form expectations, WotC already demonstrated with 3rd edition that it'd be a bad idea.. I just keep hoping that when it comes it'll be impressive rather than depressive for a change.

I think, juding from what authors like Monte Cook had to say, that it will be a big improvement over 3rd edition, but whether it'll be an improvement over 2nd remains to be seen.
